Does anyone work in a non booth rent state? I do and I'm interested to find out how if you just worked as an employee (if so what have you found is the pay rate) or what your other options are/were.
Owners, if you work in a non booth rent state I'd love to hear any of your information regarding hiring workers or if you just got a place for yourself. Thanks.
Am I the only one in a no booth state?
I've heard it's "unacceptable" by the state-- doesn't actually say illegal-- fine line & I've gotten SEVERAL opinions on this!
I received the application from the state and they send you a flyer that says BOOTH RENTAL IS ILLEGAL. I'm not being sarcastic. It is in bold.
Tashawna, what state are you located in?

Actually they do not allow booth rent, contract workers, or mobile salon. I don't think they want me to make money. LOL
It's strange in our state (in text book) it says it's only illegal in PA, in NJ it is unacceptable.... odd wording! I know of nail techs renting- they say it's a fine line because of wording & ur paying rent-- doesn't mean the state can track $ - salon is only tracking rent-- renter can claim anything & nothing! My teacher even Said that!
I am going to be outspoken here and say....That is just DUMB that they don't want you to booth rent! Geez

Just to make sure I'm not crazy I am writing this while looking at my packet from the state. The words exactly say Chair or Booth Rentals are Illegal. This is in bold with the NJ state seal in the background.

I also found this response on Yahoo Answers as to why it is illegal:Many barbers, hairdressers, manicurists, etc get out of the legal requirements for things such as paying minimum wage, workers comp insurance, social security payments etc etc etc by saying that the people working in their shop are not employees but "independant contractors" who 'rent' a booth.

This practice is abused so often that NJ has simply decided to forbid it, and require that everyone who works in a barbers shop (or hairdressing salon, manicurists, etc) be an employee of the store owner.Angry
