Greenies and Stains

Celebrity Q and A'sDoes a 'greenie' have to grow out?? Is this because it stains the nail plate or because it goes deeper than the top layer?? Jade 7/03

Hi Jade,
The green color is a stain. Bacteria digest the oils on the nail and excrete a very dark substance that deeply stains the surface. The stain will remain for 6-8 weeks before it begins to fade. As you said, it will eventually grow off. The important point to realize is that the stain will exist long after the bacteria has died. The bacteria can't move deeper into the nail. They remain on the surface. Hope that answers your question.
